the hills are alive with the sound of....

........tortured mad cyclists groaning in agony!! :-) yeah, we know it´s our own fault, no one made us do it.....

So, two days of cycling so far with us now at 2400m. Day one (Salta to Jujuy - 100km) was lovely with a winding mountainous, jungly road ( much nicer than we remembered from 1991, although we did it in the opposite direction last time ) and an easy 700m of altitude gain.Yesterday was a complete scenery change to desert from Jungle, pretty much climbing all day up the quebrada from Jujuy to Purmamarca with 1200m of climbing in 38 degC!!!. Steve looks like he´s been barbecuing his arms in case we run out of food! Teach him to forget about the sun block. The day was pretty tough on our unfit legs too. The next bit however may well kill us - 2000 metres in 35 km to a high point of 4100m! We then drop down to 3400m where we´ll camp for the night and spend New Year´s eve´on a Salar in the middle of the Andes´. Then two days at least to the next town so we need to carry mucho agua. Maybe 13 litres each Will we make it....? Stay tuned.
We ´re resting for a couple of days in Purmamarca to try and acclimatise a bit before we go for the big one. A nice Andean village with a peaceful vibe to it; well at least there is when the bus-loads of tourists have buggered off .
Happy New Year everyone! More from us in 2009. :-)

  1. 100 miles first day: that is 8 miles an hour for 12 hours. Nice slow pace to watch the scenery but at 38 degrees you need to be afster to get some wind for evaporation. Next time you need to take the water recycling gear just installed in the space shuttle instead of carrying 26 litres of water

  2. that´s 100km over 5hrs 40min cycling time - so 17 something km an hour. Maybe we should post our exact stats for you so that you can see exactly how hard or not it is for us..... thanks for the pedal faster and recylcing ideas - we´ll think about it for our next trip or maybe you could come with us next time and show us how it´s done....! :lol

  3. Hi there, had a chuckle at workulakew's comment. Hope you are having a good time. Probably a bit worn out I suspect. Happy New Year.

  4. so you want me to show you how it is done? sorry mate right now I haven't got time for this kind of thing. Besides, it is "two legs good, four legs better" in my world. I don't go for the kind of "four legs good , two legs better " viewpoint of animal farm. You will have to struggle without me. I am so busy doing a trek in the attacama desert with my Wii virtual world , which seems to be so much fun and no pain at all. Still we can compare notes when you get back

  5. I dare say that you may have one or two interesting things to say but nothing compared to what I have done. Still I will consider buying you two a drink just in case I have missed something that I haven't experienced so far in front of my 42" virtual world. You never know these days ; sometimes the software may miss something or I might have just been distracted while reaching for my cocktail and missed a detail
